Should you buy the Bose QuietComfort Ultra or the Sennheiser HD 660S2?

Both are strong picks in the headphones category. Here's how to decide:

Get the Bose QuietComfort Ultra if...

If blocking out the world is your number one priority, nothing touches these headphones. Reviewers consistently agree the ANC is class leading. Planes, trains, open offices, loud gyms. Whatever you throw at them, they shut it out better than anything else at this price. That's been true for a while and it's still true now. At 250g these are also genuinely light for over ears and the clamping force is dialed in just right. You can wear them for hours on a long haul flight and forget they're on your head. The folding design means they pack down small too, which matters when you're living out of a carry on. Sound quality is good and getting better. Energetic, punchy and well balanced with a wide soundstage. But critics point out that Sony's WH-1000XM6 and Bowers and Wilkins Px7 S3 edge them out for detail and rhythmic drive. If pure audio performance is your top priority, those are worth a look. Battery life lands at 30 hours with ANC on and 45 hours with it off, which is a big improvement over older versions. Still short of what Sennheiser offers but competitive with Sony. The Immersive Audio spatial mode is hit or miss. It works beautifully on some tracks and sounds processed and weird on others. Cinema mode is a genuinely smart addition for watching video. The companion app is functional but pretty basic compared to what rivals offer. At $429 these are a premium buy. You're paying for the best ANC on the market, all day comfort and solid sound. If those are your priorities, it's money well spent. If you want the absolute sharpest sound or the deepest feature set, shop around.

Get the Sennheiser HD 660S2 if...

Open back design and 300 ohm drivers deliver a soundstage no wireless headphone can match.
